The website gives a brief overview of the epidemiology and pathophysiology of myocardial infarction (MI), the types of MI, risk factors and complications as well as discussing symptoms, diagnosis, and possible treatment options. The product, Metalyse®, is introduced with coverage of its mechanism of action, biochemistry, availability, administration and indications as well as its efficacy and safety. Interviews with experts and the results of large studies demonstrate the superiority of Metalyse® compared with other available products.

The website also features a virtual symposium on MI with audio recordings of presentations sychronised with the corresponding full-screen slides.

The latest news on cardiovascular disease, and materials such as the product monograph and a slide kit are also available.

What is Thrombolysis?

Thrombolytic, or clot-busting drugs rapidly destroy unwanted blood clots. They can be used in the early treatment of some heart attacks. Heart attacks are caused by a blood clot blocking the supply of blood to an area of the heart muscle. As a result the affected area of heart muscle is damaged or dies, and the patient may develop longer term heart problems or may die.

Thrombolytic drugs work by dissolving the fibrin mesh that binds the blood clot together. This can greatly improve the flow of blood to the affected area of the heart and prevent ill health or death in some cases.

One reason why people should get to hospital as quickly as possible after a suspected heart attack is because thrombolytic drugs can only be used in the first few hours after a heart attack. The sooner they are used the more likely they are to work well.
